Our Approach

Built on science,
not engagement tricks

PrimalMatch is grounded in peer-reviewed research on what actually makes relationships work — not what keeps people swiping. We've studied the literature on personality, compatibility, and shared values to build a matching system rooted in evidence.

We believe transparency builds trust — even when the truth is uncomfortable. When personality data points to patterns linked to relationship dissatisfaction, conflict escalation, or divorce risk, we tell you directly. Other apps hide that information to keep you engaged. We surface it because we'd rather you make a clear-eyed decision now than pay for a preventable mistake later.

Below are the studies that inform how we match — and how we warn.

Our Framework

The HEXACO personality model
in compatibility research

PrimalMatch's compatibility engine is built on the HEXACO model of personality structure — a six-factor framework developed through large-scale cross-cultural lexical studies (Ashton & Lee, 2007). HEXACO extends the traditional Five-Factor Model by introducing a distinct Honesty-Humility dimension, which has been shown to predict prosocial behavior, relationship trust, and long-term partnership stability independent of the other factors.

The six dimensions — Honesty-Humility (H), Emotionality (E), Extraversion (X), Agreeableness (A), Conscientiousness (C), and Openness to Experience (O) — capture personality variance that is directly relevant to relationship formation and maintenance. Our matching algorithm weights these dimensions based on the empirical literature summarized below, with particular emphasis on:

H

Honesty-Humility

Predicts sincerity, fairness, and resistance to exploitation in intimate relationships. High H individuals show lower rates of infidelity and greater reciprocity in partnerships.

E

Emotionality

Encompasses emotional reactivity, anxiety, and sentimentality. Research consistently shows that combined high Emotionality in both partners is a significant risk factor for marital dissatisfaction and conflict escalation (Cheon et al., 2024).

X

Extraversion

Measures social self-esteem, boldness, and liveliness. Complementary rather than identical Extraversion levels are often associated with stable dyadic functioning.

A

Agreeableness

Captures patience, forgiveness, and flexibility. High Agreeableness facilitates constructive conflict resolution — a key predictor of sustained relationship satisfaction (Malouff et al., 2010).

C

Conscientiousness

Reflects discipline, organization, and deliberation. Longitudinal data shows that individual-level Conscientiousness is one of the strongest personality predictors of relationship longevity (Bach et al., 2025).

O

Openness to Experience

Encompasses intellectual curiosity, aesthetic sensitivity, and unconventionality. Shared Openness is associated with deeper intellectual alignment and lifestyle compatibility in couples.

Building on DeYoung, Quilty & Peterson's (2007) work demonstrating that each Big Five domain comprises two distinct aspects, our compatibility scoring operates at the aspect level — providing finer-grained personality alignment data than domain-level matching alone. When a user taps into a potential match's profile, they see a trait-by-trait comparison highlighting where they align and where they differ — with plain-language explanations of what each similarity or difference means for long-term relationship outcomes.

Critically, when this data reveals trait combinations that the literature associates with elevated conflict risk, relationship dissatisfaction, or divorce probability, we surface that information explicitly. PrimalMatch is built to be honest about compatibility — including when the honest answer is that a pairing carries significant long-term risk.

The peer-reviewed studies below represent the empirical foundation for both our matching and our compatibility warnings.

How personality traits shape lasting relationships

Meta-Analysis · Malouff et al. (2010)

The Five-Factor Model of personality and relationship satisfaction of intimate partners

This meta-analysis shows that low Neuroticism and high levels of Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Extraversion are linked to higher relationship satisfaction.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: Supports using HEXACO personality matching to help users find more satisfying long-term connections.

Longitudinal Study · Bach et al. (2025)

Relationship satisfaction and The Big Five — Utilizing longitudinal data covering 9 years

A 9-year study of 486 couples found that a person's own low Neuroticism and high Conscientiousness strongly predict sustained relationship satisfaction over time.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: Highlights why showing Emotionality (Neuroticism) and Conscientiousness scores can help users make better matching decisions.

Is actual similarity necessary for attraction? A meta-analysis of actual and perceived similarity

Perceived similarity (feeling similar to your partner) remains a strong predictor of attraction and satisfaction even in established relationships.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: Explains why our trait-by-trait profile comparison — which highlights similarities and differences with real explanations — helps users feel confident about where they align with a match.

Between Facets and Domains: 10 Aspects of the Big Five

This influential paper demonstrates that each of the Big Five traits (including Conscientiousness and Neuroticism/Emotionality) can be divided into two distinct aspects, providing a more nuanced understanding of personality structure that predicts behavior and compatibility.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: Our trait-by-trait profile comparison builds on this deeper aspect-level analysis — showing users exactly where they align and differ, with explanations of what each difference means for their relationship.

Neuroticism / Emotionality Compatibility

Why emotional stability matters in matching

Personality Research · Cheon et al. (2024)

Totality model of neuroticism: The sum of spousal neuroticism and marital satisfaction

When both partners have high neuroticism, relationship satisfaction suffers the most; pairing a higher-neuroticism person with a low-neuroticism (emotionally stable) partner leads to significantly better outcomes.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: This is why we emphasize balanced Emotionality scores — avoiding two high-neuroticism matches while allowing high + low pairings that can still thrive.

Clinical Research · Brock et al. (2013)

Marital Processes, Neuroticism, and Stress as Risk Factors for Internalizing Symptoms

High neuroticism in both partners creates negative cycles of conflict and emotional withdrawal, while a low-neuroticism partner helps buffer these risks and supports stability.

Why it matters for PrimalMatch: Reinforces the importance of showing Emotionality compatibility so users can avoid unstable high + high pairings.
